I would love to help you get started with your family genealogy. Obviously the names of your parents and grandparents are important. My first step is to always locate them in the Federal census records. This will provide a huge amount of information including place of birth, immigration information, number of children in the family, education, address of the home they were living at etc. Census records are available on line through several sources like ancestry.com or individual genealogical sites for specific regions. You can also visit your local Family History Center (if there is one from the LDS church - they have census records on microfilm.) It is a great tool and can open the door to multiple generations but the most recent census that can be viewed is 1930.
