You can start in the local library where ancestry.com library edition is free. The library will help you get started. You get info about your family from the censuses. First of all collect every bit of info you can from your personal birth certificates etc. and take them along with you for reference. You need Full names, addresses etc if you've got them to make the search easier and quicker.
hi, i'm trying to find out more about my mothers father, Ernest Johnson. He was born about 1896 and married Ellen Lambert in 1915. i've gone a long way back assuming i got the right one but nobody seems to know what happened to him after 1945 when he walked out?
i really need help. im looking for any other members of my family, if there is anymore out there. my nans name was EDITH EBDON my grandads name was WILLIAM EBDON. my mums name was PATRCIA EBDON but now uses different surname as she has remarried. my dads name was GORDON OLIVER. dont no much about him apart from he is dead. and that he had a brother but dont no name. but can find out. if anyone can help me i would be most gratefull. no time wasters please. You dont say where you are located or where your grandparents lived? When I started my family tree I started with the local resources. Churches, newspapers, school records, cemeteries, libraries, local history books, tax and land records at the courthouse. First, start with your own information, then go to your parents and get their information. Keep working your way back to your grandparents. It is also good to know where the vital records are kept in your county. Should you get "stuck" on one individual, go check birth, death and marriage records. Also search for land deeds to gather all the information you need.
I like to use familysearch.org and heritagequest, which you can use at your local library. There you will also find a "genealogy" section and may find a family file or books on your family surname.
Also, interview other family members, like an aunt/uncle or great aunts/uncles. Ask for old family bibles if any are available. Once you get this information, your search will be somewhat easier. Hope this helps.
I've put in the name of a brother then added his first wife and their two children. They divorced. When I put his new wife and child in, I can no longer see the previous children attached to this brother. When I go to the tree for his name, it shows the previous wife (divorced) but no children as well as the new wife and child. Is there any way to get the children always showing even if it is following a divorce?
