The history of the Crow's family in a America is an interesting one. In 1666 a John and Ann Crowe were transported into Dorchester Co.,Maryland (transported meaning they were indentured and required to repay the cost of their passage).

Records indicate that Gournay Crow came to this Continent during 1671. Paying his own passage (thence was not indentured) and made several land purchases in Dorchester Co., Maryland. He settled on theBlackwater River on an estate he called the Crowe's Nest or as it was sometimes called "Crowe Lodge."

In 1673 a Francis Crow was transported into Dorchester, and in 1675 a Ralph Crow arrived.

The relationships between these various Crow's is not know, but that they were somehow related to Gournay. Gournay added to his estate on at least three occasions;

(1) Grant #557" Addition to Crowe Lodge to Gournay Crowe for 44 acres and surveyed on 4-12-16 82"

(2) Grant #635 -"East Bilbeny/ Billeny to Gournay Crowe for 56 acre s surveyed 9-10-1683"

(3) in 1687 a patent was issued to Gournay Crowe in Dorchester Co., for 116 acres ,called "The Addition".

Made and recorded 20 June 1682, Folio 58: John Pritchett to John Hungerford land called "Ringwood" containing 50A by grant to John Pritchett Witnesses: Tho. Pattison, Gournay Crowe

The Books in Roanoke Library concerning Gournay Crow, said Gournay and the other Crow's were from England and some by the way of Ireland, but no mention of any city or ship was given. Other than wherethey landed in Dorchester Co.,Maryland. There was no other mention of Gournay except the various of land transactions he made. The name was not to date and appears to have been carried down through the family lines and therefore leaves some mystery regarding the man and why his name did not survive.

There is nothing to suggest that John Crow ( b.1666) was the start of the Dorchester Crow family. John Crow was mention at this time who married Mary Unick\ Urick May 24 , 1702. This marriage is sometimes Attributed to John Crow of Gourney(b 1683) but could be a mistake (Notes of a William Crow but could be middle or real first name). There were at least two children Isaac, Born 1810 and James on May 12,1714. (However other DOB puts it at November 11, 1713. I am unsure if this is the same James or if perhaps a brother) This particular John later is found in possession of "Crow's Addition" Which was earlier owned by Gournay Crow. John may have been the son of Gournay 's but there is no proof of that.

3-4-2002 The Crow-Crowe Families of England, Ireland and America: The Crow name is very old in England. Sir Isacc Crowe headed the East India Co. during the 1500's, Sir Iric Crowe, also English, was knighted by the King of England and was given a large tract of land and castle in Ireland. The Crowe's of Ireland mixed with the native Irish. In 1685 there was a divesting started by the Duke of Monmouth who wanted to be the King of England. Among his top military people some of the Sir Iric Family. Unfortunately for them the Duke lost, was executed and his army taken Prisoner, many were executed,but the younger ones were spared.They were stripped of their possession and sent off to the Colonies and forced to farm or work in the military. We do not know the origins of Gournay and John where either Irish-English or the English group. They did however farm in Balitmore Co., (now Hartford Co.) Maryland. The later generations moved into Virginia, North and South Carolina,Tennessee, Alabama , Georgia and points west and northwest.

At the bottom Gournay is listed. Not sure if this is the father of John, but many genealogist have him listed as the father of John
